Mercy, Mercy, Divine Mercy!
1. What is a cenacle?
A cenacle is a small faith-sharing community. The word Cenacle is derived from the meeting of our Lord's followers in the upper room where He celebrated the Last Supper. The Latin word for supper is cena. Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist there in the company of His Disciples.
2. What is the Divine Mercy Cenacle?
The Diving Mercy Cenacle is a group of parishioners who gather together to study the Diary of St. Maria Faustina using the Cenacle Formation Manual, the Catholic Catechism and Holy Scripture. We meet every other Tuesday at 9:40 AM (after the 9 AM Mass) in the St. John Neumann Room for 90 minutes.
3. What is the format of the Divine Mercy Cenacle?
- Open cenacle meeting with a prayer of praise, gratitude and thanksgiving.
- Study of The Diary of St. Faustina.
- Prayers of petition.
- Recital of the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
- Closing prayers and messages.
4. Who is St. Maria Faustina Kowalska?
Helena Kowalska was born in
Poland
on August 25, 1905, one of eight children. She had a great love of the Holy Eucharist and felt called to religious life. On August 1, 1925 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Throughout her life, St. Faustina had visions and conversations with Jesus. Jesus instructed her to write down His instructions. This became the THE DIARY OF ST. MARIA FAUSTINA KOWALSKA.
St.
Faustina died at the age of 33 on October 5, 1938.
5. What is the Divine Mercy Chaplet?
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a form of prayer taught to St. Faustina by Our Lord Himself. The Chaplet is significant because it brings together the sacrifice of the Lord's Passion and the Most Holy Eucharist. The Chaplet consists of several paryers that are recited on Rosary beads. The recital of the Chaplet takes an individual approximtely 10-15 minutes.
6. What is the Divine Mercy Image?
The Image is of JESUS, THE DIVINE MERCY. The image originated from a vision that St. Faustina had on 2/22/1931. Our Lord was clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching his garment in the area of the heart. From the heart came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. Jesus expressed a desire to have the image in her vision painted and that it should be signed: “Jesus, I Trust in You.”
7. What is the Feast of the Divine Mercy?
The Feast of the Divine Mercy falls on the first Sunday after Easter Sunday. Jesus told St. Faustina, “I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.”
8. Why is TRUST paramount to living the message of the Divine Mercy?
TRUST calls us to the realization that God is in charge, and everything we do is done out of love of God. Many of us are so used to being in control, only to realize later that it was God who opened the doors.
9. What do the Rays in the Divine Mercy Image represent?
Jesus explained to St. Faustina: “The pale rays stand for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of the souls….These two rays issued forth from the very depths of my tender mercy when My agonized heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.”
10. What are the promises given to St. Faustina regarding those that spread the message of His mercy?
As promised by Jesus to St. Faustina: “Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire lives as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but a Merciful Savior.”
